Ricardo Villalobos

Ricardo Villalobos is one of the most significant and influential figures in minimal techno and microhouse. Born in Santiago, Chile in 1970, his family relocated to Germany when he was three, fleeing the aftermath of the 1973 coup. Raised in Frankfurt, he began playing percussion in his early teens and later studied in Cuba and Brazil, building a rhythmic foundation that would define his sound. His earliest releases under his own name arrived in 1995 on Ladomat 2000 and Playhouse, and by the early 2000s he'd become a defining voice of the minimal movement, releasing career-shaping albums like Alcachofa (2003) and The au Harem d'Archimede (2004) on Playhouse and Perlon. In 2006, he played to roughly 300,000 people at Berlin's Loveparade alongside Richie Hawtin and Luciano, and he topped Resident Advisor's Top 100 DJs poll at the end of both 2008 and 2010. He remains closely associated with fellow Chilean artist Luciano, with whom he has frequently collaborated.
